Sonny Bill Williams - villain or hero?

So it's Sonny Bill v's the Bulldogs & the NRL.
And the winner is > > > Sonny Bill Williams!

Unlike most of the media, (including the footy show dress-wearing clowns), and the sheep like drones, (that think whatever the media tell them to think), I waited to hear all sides of the story before I came to any conclusions.
     
Everyone, (and I mean the wowsers & conservatives here), is whinging & whining about contracts. Contracts, contracts, contracts - he had a contract and he has to comply with it or he is a weak, spineless man that should be spat upon.
     
Well lets examine the NRL - Bulldogs contract. A contract for around $200K per year for 5 years for one of the superstars of the game.
     
Point one is that Sonny Bill was getting completely screwed. They are laying him down face first, pulling his pants round his ankles, spreading his cheeks and doing him hard where the sun don't shine and then they expect him to smile, shutup and just take it. Right!, as if.
     
Why do the Bulldogs & NRL think that they can get away with this blatant buggary? Mainly because he is an Islander or lets say it, black! It's no secret that the black skinned players in rugby league get paid far less than their white team-mates & counterparts. So do we also blame his agent as well for telling him to lay down & take it?, absolutely yes! No doubt his agent did back room deals with the Bulldogs for them to get such an amazingly great deal.
     
If you or I were Sonny Bill Williams agent would you sell him for around $200K per year??? NO WAY ON PLANET EARTH IN A MILLION YEARS. You and I know nothing about being an agent but nobody would sell him for less than $1M per year on the International market. Am I right???? I mean get serious, multimillion dollar offers from all over the world & his agent recommends the NRL & the Bulldogs!!!! Unbloody believable - They set him up & did him hard and that's a FACT!
     
Point two, is it a smart business decision to stay in a contract that is screwing you? NO it's bad business and so Sonny Bill Williams made the CORRECT business decision and terminated the contract. Very smart, very correct - good business decision Sonny! We love you and the haters can go jump off a cliff.
     
Point three, what's a contract worth from & NRL team? Well lets ask one of the other superstars of the game Mark Gasnier what he has to say about NRL contracts. The Dragons & the NRL totally screwed Mark also!!! They made a contract, (about 1/3 of what he's worth), with Mark and then they refused to pay out on it!!!! Yes that's right ABSOLUTELY REFUSED to pay out on the contact. The spineless Dragons then blame the NRL and the very poorly managed NRL shot back, like a little girl in the playground, not our fault it's your fault. You're all scum is all I can say - You need to all find other jobs, you have failed the players and supporters and have shown yourselves to be pathetic business managers!
     
So a contract with the NRL & clubs is worth ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. The only reason that Mark isn't suing their ass is because he got a better deal on the international market and he's CUTTING HIS LOSSES. See ya Mark and have a great time travelling the world and living your dreams because they would have only been limited and eventually crushed in Australia with the pathetic management of the NRL.
     
Point four, screw the boss! (an Australian term meaning we don't take crap from anyone, especially from the 'man'). What's happened to Australians??? 10 - 15 years ago Australians would tell anyone to get nicked but now it's the Return of the Wowsers! Do what you're told, obey the rules, you are free to think what we tell you to think - it's like I'm in a horror movie surrounded by mind numbed zombies. Where's the fighting spirit that would never let the media, big business & government crush the little guy!!!! Hello is there anybody out there feeling something.
     
Point five, what would you do if you had a 5 year employment contract and you didn't like your boss because he/she was a dick a and you didn't like your company because it was mismanaged and going down the drain and you were offered another job after looking around a bit? That's right you would have to at least consider the offer and to those that wouldn't - you're an idiot because if the company goes broke or decided your yesterdays news you get NOTHING! And lets say you were on $50K per year and the new offer was for $250K per year and you could travel the world and live your wildest dreams. Would you break your contract? YES YOU WOULD!!! If not you have a serious mental problem.
     
Do we expect Loyalty from NRL teams towards players? NO, so why do we expect the reverse? Sonny Bill only did what you & I would do under similar circumstances with our current jobs - and that's a FACT! The haters crucify him because they love the hate, they revel in it - do it MY WAY of pay the price.
     
Point six, what is the legality of a salary cap for our Rugby League players? Well they simply can't do it when 95% of Australian athletes & sports people have NO such salary cap. Absolutely unfair, absolutely unacceptable and absolutely un-Australian! No Gold medal for Sonny Bill and the rest of the NRL players no multi-million dollar contracts, no great advertising deals and no respect from the NRL, the teams, the media or the public. They'll all turn on you in a second if you don't toe the line and do what's you're told and perform like a trained seal.
     
Point seven, lets have a look at what some of our other top sports people are earning. The Olympics is a good comparison, what do you get financially if you win a gold medal for swimming really, really fast? Around $1M - $2M per year! Swimming's great but it's just swimming fast in a straight line, they don't even catch waves, lol and no comparison to the supreme athlete skills of a great rugby league player. Same as running really, really fast - it's all great but try doing that holding a ball and being hammered by 13 large men at the same time. Rugby league is very, very hard and the players get nothing near what they are worth on the international market when they play in Australia.
     
Sonny Bill went to the Bulldogs & NRL management in an attempt to renegotiate his contract. Why should he have the option of renegotiating his contact? Because he's a human being not a piece of meat. Why else? because all the superstars in the Bulldogs left the Bulldogs. So the Bulldogs have an extra $5M to play with over the next few years and it's fair enough that if they now want Sonny Bill to step up and take the lead and be one of their main stars that they would want to reward him for stepping up. BUT NO was there answer, there's nothing for you Sonny Bill you black bastard, you shut the hell up and take it. Right, as if in a million years!!!!!!!!!!!!! Any Australian that would take that crap from any Boss is not an Australian, simple as that - all you are is a shadow.
     
How much does the captain of the Australian basketball team get to play in the US??? He gets a $7M contract!!!! Sonny Bill would have to play for the NRL for around 35 years to earn anything like that. Our soccer players, that's right footy heads, even soccer players earn more than our rugby league players. If they get any good at all they're off to Europe, US, Asia or elsewhere on multi-million dollar contracts but NOT rugby league players no, they have to stay here on a pissy amount of Australian dollars because it's the right thing to do by the NRL & the supporters. Well we know where that'll get you, face down in the mud & but up to the sunshine!
     
Point eight, who's going to pay for Sonny Bills Williams long term injuries? The NRL?? the Bulldogs??? Insurance???? Non of these will pay - Sonny Bill will pay in every way. When at forty he needs reconstructive surgery on his knee and he gets up limping every morning with pain will the Bulldogs or the NRL be there? NO they won't. They use you, abuse you and then spit you out when they are finished with you because as the Bulldogs said - THIS IS A BUSINESS. I'm now 43 years old and have played for my state & played for my country and put my body on the line and I can tell you from personal experience that the shattered disk in my neck that fractured into my spinal cord is very painful and will be for the rest of my life. It prohibits me from playing sports and activities that I would like to play and sometimes I can't even get out of my bed or car seat. I had full sports injury insurance at the time but now it's outside their claim period so I have to just eat it as the $50K specialised operation is put on hold.
     
Once the NRL & teams have used you all up and your body is a creaking mess of pain they will discard you and you're on your own - that's a FACT! There's nothing wrong with that in business as long as the players are getting a lion share of the profits of the business so they can take care of these things as they come up in later life. Right now the players are NOT getting the lion share, they are getting the scavengers share after the television executives, NRL management, teams management and the rest pick all the meat off the bones. Rugby League is a 1/2 billion dollar a year industry so who's getting all the money - not the players!
     
Point nine, Sonny Bill is NOT Australian! The NRL & Bulldogs can huff & puff till their faces turn blue but the contract ends with the borders of Australia the complete twits. An Australian contract is not even valuable enough to be used as poo paper overseas, it's worth absolutely nothing and has absolutely no power of enforcement. Yes that's right, Australia is just one small country out of 50 countries where Sonny Bill can play rugby league or union. He never need come back to Australia besides when the All Blacks play Australia.
   
The mentally challenged, David Gallop from the NRL, thinks that the Rugby Union people will help out - Right you total moron David. Rugby League has been stealing players from Rugby Union for over 100 years and now you think they'll help you out???? David, you really have a very small brain & a very short memory!
     
Point ten, NRL mismanagement of Rugby League in Australia. Too many teams in Sydney, illegal salary cap, very poor marketing, way too much illegal violence in the game and not taking care of players long term needs.
     
We all know that there's too many teams in Sydney - it's a fact but the limp wristed NRL is too spineless to make a master plan for the future existence of the game.
     
The salary cap is illegal, squashes competition, short changes the players & is un-Australian.
     
AFL, soccer, basketball, netball, extreme sports, tidily winks and the rest have all grown massively over the past 10 years whereas the NRL has shrunk in stature taking the game with it. How many of the NRL executives have a masters in marketing? that's right non! They have no idea what they are doing and obviously it's now proven that the game would have been far better off with Fox & the Super League.
     
In conclusion, I support Sonny Bill Williams completely - he made the correct decision for himself and that's all that counts and if you don't like it you need to get a life. And if you want to call him things like coward and scum I'd like to see you say that to his face! If they want to pursue Sonny Bill and make things hard for him then all Islander background rugby league players may consider a STRIKE so as to bring the NRL to it's knees until you all get a much better deal - nobody is going to do it for you.
     
TO ALL PLAYERS - Sonny Bill is the Jesus of rugby league and let himself be crucified by the peons for your sake so stand up and rally around him, Sonny Bill is the MAN!
     
Since when do Australians side with big business???? Stuff big business, stuff the NRL & Bulldogs, stuff channel 9 & the rip-off criminal limo riding executives, stuff the clown run footy show and stuff the media. You all get paid much more than Sunny Bill and only have your own financial interests at heart, you're a bunch of two faced, gonad sniffing, pillow biters AND I'LL BE HAPPY TO SAY THAT TO YOUR FACE!!!

The NRL and the Bulldogs should leave Sonny Bill alone!!! I agree that he shouldn't have just got up and left like he did with only 4yrs left on his contract with the Bulldogs, but obviously he didn't like it there. Everyone's saying what a bad example he's setting for all the Polynesian players. He isn't doing that. He's chasing his dreams and I think that's what everyone should do.

i couldn't give a f@ck about the media and the bulldogs CEO, even  though i am a doggie fan. SONNY is a crazy machine player and deserves even more than what he's getting currently in toulon, so i haven't lost an ounce of respect for the champion. make the most of it mate! kill it in toulon! and soon we'll see you at the all blacks!
 
Bulldogs are f@@kin hypocrites they called him Money Bill Williams but they just want the money as well NRL is a business not a sport anymore the players are given allowances and capped off, every player in the NRL under the salary cap should be standing up and saying they want more money from the NRL because they're not afraid to do it to players yet everywun still wants to hate on SBW Watta joke.

As far as the Bulldogs & NRL are concerned it's all about money and as long as they get paid off from the frenchies they'll b happy. People will be all for or all against this but Polynesian players in the NRL are thrown little sub-standard contracts to begin with and only until it’s realized they are worth it they are offered a rise. Something needs to be changed in the development of young Polynesian’s.

Obviously Sonny Bill management should have said up front to the bulldogs, 'We are breaking the contract - How much do you want?' Correct? no, not correct. It's called a power play and Sonny Bill & his management implemented it perfectly. Would the Bulldogs have settled for only a $750k pay out if they weren't up against the wall with legal fees & shifting public opinion. Perfectly played Sonny Bill, whata move - whata man, now lets get back to the game!

Two the two polynesian morons who were asked for their opinion on the footy show - get educated and learn to speak - that comment "we dont understand the western way" - maybe you don't but you did polynesians no favours.  Its the other way around fools - the NRL doesnt understand the polynesian way and that true mates stick by their mate's decisions as per Choc who openly supports him by going over there to see him through this rubbish.  My point was proved when fatty announced he didnt know the aboriginal origin of one of the most dominant figures in rugby league sitting right beside them every week - amazing!!!  And they have the gall to comment about mateship - obviously havent bothered to get to know their own "mates" families.  What losers!

contracts are just pieces of paper, and are as worthless as the paper there written on. there broken every day for all sorts of reasons usually monetary. the nrl is a business unfortunately most if not all players are ripped off paid peanuts, any who suffer career ending injuries arent looked after their contract is ripped up, clubs don't continue to pay out for players who cant play. sonny bill did the right thing for him and the rest of the players should stand up and demand more from the game, so that when there past their playing days they still have the resources to look after their smashed bodies. so good on you sonny bill, while your legs can still carry you and your heart still beats do the best for you. and i cant wait to see you in a black jersey as center for the mighty all blacks. be the champion your were always destined to be...
 
Sonny is the "Man" and Mike I like your summing up.  I do think though SBW would have huge support in his move from all camps instead of just us if he said when asked why he left, something like...."My contract was ridiculous, i tried to talk/renegotiate (which he did)but the bulldogs management wouldnt have a bar of it.  It was really getting me down affecting not only my game but my life and I was unknowingly pulling other teammates down as well, Tana Umunga gave me an offer I couldn't refuse but had to make a decision on now and I did."  End of story!!!!!   (Response) I'm sure that's what he wanted to say but his youth, media inexperience and being led by a 20 yr veteran sports reporter caused him to provide far too many excuses instead of just one simple reason - short & sweet is always the way.
